There are times during travel when you have nothing but negativity to say about those you encounter. Maybe someone cut you off in traffic, perhaps the Uber delivery guy forgot your chocolate milk shake. It has happened, and even though it shouldn’t, it can make an already stressful day that much worse.

But sometimes it’s the opposite. Sometimes you run into people that add a level of happiness to your day. Thankfully, this is what we encountered during our time at DTW the other day.

My little guy is very into airplanes. He spends a lot of time watching videos on the different types of aircrafts, he did a really cool flight simulator when we were in Poland, and he plays a bunch of different airplane games on his tablet.

The Excitement Is Still There

Even though we have flown many times, he still gets excited to see the different planes and check out the airport. Our time in Detroit was no different, although one person made his experience much more special than we ever expected.

We had a brief delay with our flight, so we found an area to sit while we waited. After a bit, my son wanted to see if our plane had arrived at the gate yet, so we got up and walked over. While we didn’t see our plane, I saw that our Delta gate agent was at the desk. I told my son that he should ask her what type of plane we were flying, as that was the burning question that he wanted to have an answer to.

My boy said he was a bit shy, but I encouraged him to go up to her. I think that the gate agent (who I later learned was Vera) could sense that he was a bit nervous. I said that he had a question and she asked him to come around to her, behind the desk.

Vera Is a Delta Rockstar

When I say this woman went above and beyond, that’s not even scratching the surface. She showed him all the information on the computer about the plane, including where it was on their radar. They looked at what type it was, how many minutes out, and where it was coming from. Then she realized she needed to make an announcement about boarding. Without hesitation, she asked my son to help her with it!

Our boy was over the moon with excitement after this! He ran over to tell his dad, even though he had witnessed the event across the waiting area. This event alone would have made the rest of his year. However, Vera wasn’t quite done being amazing.

As we were getting ready to board, Vera asked Connor to help her out. She showed him how to scan the boarding passes and kept him by her side until the last person was scanned in. He would scan a boarding pass and tell every passenger: “Have a nice flight!”

In a world where most people can’t be bothered to slow down and take a minute to be kind, Vera stepped up. She showed this little man that his questions were important to her, and she gave him an opportunity to be part of something that he thought was so fun and exciting. So many people came up to him on the plane, calling him an honorary Delta employee. Apparently the pilots had some trading cards waiting for him, but we didn’t know! We are hopeful that our pilots on the way home will have some that he can collect.

The Impact Is Holding Strong

Connor hasn’t stopped talking about Vera since this happened. He tells me all the time “I just love that Delta worker”. He also hasn’t stopped telling everyone we have encountered on our trip about his experience and has made sure that all our friends and family have seen the video of him “working”.

To Vera, the Delta gate agent at DTW for flight 2480 to Baltimore, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You are a rare gem in this world and you have made a lasting impact on my mini future pilot.

To Delta, hire more people like Vera! Also, add me to your affiliate program so I can put your adverts in my blog posts!
