Last week I talked about boosting your strength when you feel like you can’t. And this week I want to continue that conversation by sharing a new tool that I made to help jumpstart the strength-building process!

To go forward and improve on something, you need to know what specific things and situations you want to improve on, right? This is critical because you can’t build on the unknown. A good way to figure out what those things are is to think back on situations, circumstances, and dreams that we have had or still have, as well as looking to people in our lives that we see as role models.

In all honesty, every one of us has things in our past that were not wonderful examples of strength and kindness.

Additionally, we all have dreams that we have not yet accomplished.

And yet, there are others out there that seem to have it all figured out.

Moreover, with all of this in mind, how do we get to where we want to be?

By working through the sticking points.

Although this will be an easy exercise for some, it will be more difficult for others. But the beauty of it is that it is individual to you and your strength-building journey. In knowing that, you can feel free to repeat the exercise as many times as you want!

What this worksheet exercise does is encourages you to reflect on moments in your life that have stuck with you. This could be while working to be a strong individual, or just through events that you have faced in everyday life. For example, it may be a situation that you were part of in high school that you just don’t feel good about. Work through it with a strength-based lens. Furthermore, perhaps you really aspire to show confidence and strength like your co-worker? Analyze what it is that they do that makes them come across that way. Additionally, is there a dream that you keep bumping back because the thought of actually doing it is a bit terrifying? Take tiny steps towards it. Finally, what emotions do you feel hinder your growth in the strength arena? Examine why they are there and how you can move past them.

What are the four powerful steps that can help you?

Think about “Something Old”

“Something New”

“Something Borrowed”

and “Something Blue”.

……ummm…..Kristyn? Isn’t that a wedding tradition?

Why yes it is! But the words can also apply here!

1. Something Old

What is something that has happened in the past that you wish you could re-do? Take yourself through the process of what you would do differently now.

The past is your lesson. The present is your gift. The future is your motivation.

Unknown

2. Something New

What is something that you have always wanted to try but have been too nervous to? Make a plan to do it. Whether it’s just researching what you need or setting a date, put it on your to-do list in some form!

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’

Eleanor Roosevelt

3. Something Borrowed

Think about someone you know that radiates strength. What is it that they do that makes them appear so strong? Replicate their actions for an hour, afternoon, or day.

For what it’s worth: it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you find you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over again.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

4. Something Blue

Think of something that is holding you back from being at the level of strength that you desire. What is it? Why is it having this effect on you? How can you move past it?

We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up, seeing it is not as dreadful as it appeared, discovering we have the strength to stare it down.

Eleanor Roosevelt

I compiled it all into a worksheet that you can print out and complete, this way you can put all of your thoughts on paper and refer back to them as needed. What I think you’ll find is that writing it out really helps you to devote your thoughts to the question and topic at hand, rather than briefly considering it before you switch the tab back over to Facebook.

All in all, building your internal strength is a PROCESS.

Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my tenacity.

Louis Pasteur

Therefore, it is not an overnight thing. Instead, it is a perpetual cycle of reflection, growth, uncomfortableness, experiments, and research. As time goes on you will find the methods and strategies that work best for you. This worksheet will help you to find what some of your sticking points are that need to be further investigated. Do it once, do it twice, do it 84 times if it helps you! Ultimately, building the habit of reflection and growth is a mindset and skill that will carry us through the most difficult of times.

So go forward and give yourself the gift of it!
