I don’t love the colder months, but I definitely don’t mind it. When I envision myself during those times, I think of cozy clothes, warm and fuzzy blankets, hot cocoa and good coffee, and great smelling candles. These images are partnered with the scene of either leaves or snow falling, a crisp smell to the air and dim light.

About two years ago, I got a book on sale. It was called “The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets To Happy Living”. I had never even heard about this way of living that is Hygge, but I couldn’t push away the idea of finding out the secrets to happy living. And it was on sale via Kindle! I couldn’t say no.

Turns out, this is exactly my way of living jam!

Hygge Life Is The Life For Me!

For those who have never heard of it, hygge is a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (per the Oxford dictionary). Basically, in a nutshell, it’s living in the cozy and warm environment that you look forward to every fall and winter. Like hoodies and pumpkin spice all year round (in different forms).

So I read the book and was hooked. There’s so many times that people incorporate hygge into their lives and don’t even know it. Did you ever read a book with a cuppa cocoa on a rainy day? Hygge. Have you lit a bunch of candles and watched Hallmark movies during an evening at home? Straight hygge. Do you remember a time when you busted out your fuzzy socks, coziest loungewear and baked your favorite treats? That, my friends, is quite hygge-licious.

Hygge is the lifestyle that we all want to live in, and this gives a legit term to use to explain it to others.

And what’s more? It’s results are associated with high levels of happiness! What?! I mean, obviously sweat pants and cookies are going to equate to happiness, but this is like, proven.

With smart people with degrees and stuff.

So right now, I am sitting in my house. I have on a warm jacket, socks and pants. A shirt as well, but it’s under the jacket and not warm. Why do I need a warm jacket, you ask? Well because it’s chilly out and I purposely opened the window so I could experience the chilliness. And I paired it with a warm and hearty breakfast, and will follow it up with a cup of pumpkin spice coffee.

Some may call this ridiculous, my husband included.

I call it happiness.

Take your pick.

All I know is that my mood improves when there is a chill in the air and I can partake in things that I find comforting. Summer doesn’t do that for me, being a ginger and all. Sunburns don’t bring happiness and I get sick in the heat. Macintosh apple candles, sugar cookies, hot drinks, naps wrapped in warm blankets and my favorite wool socks bring me great joy.

So go put on some sweatpants, watch your favorite flick and do what makes you comfortable! Do it in the name of happiness! And if anyone questions your motives, tell them that it’s smart people proven!

Processing…
Success! You're on the list.
