I haven’t talked much about our trip to Poland that my family and I took in April of 2024, but it’s something that I need to do. To start out, it seems that most of the time when I say that we went there I get a weird look from people asking why we chose there. The country is a bit of a mystery and many don’t understand what all it has to offer.
The truth of the matter is, we had points that covered most of the trip due to the Royal Caribbean cruise that wronged us and the exchange rate looked great. So we booked it, packed up all our kid friendly travel essentials, and took off. There wasn’t much more in the way of rhyme or reason in that decision.
One day I was having a conversation with a woman about how crazy it was to get Taylor Swift tickets. I was not in the market, but she was. She started the story by saying: “One of my friends bought tickets in this random country that nobody would go to, what was it? Hold on, let me check.”
When she found the location she told me that the friend got Taylor Swift tickets in Poland. haha. I then told her we had just been there a few months ago and it’s actually a great place to visit.
What Adventures In Poland Are There To Be Had?
I will preface this conversation by saying that Poland has many small towns and cities that are worthy of exploring. Because of the kids and our sanity, we only opted to see two of them. If we ventured out to other areas we would have had many more activities to choose from, but we chose the slow travel route instead.
Again, sanity was at play here.
Therefore, we started our adventures in Poland in Warsaw. We flew into the city and stayed for a few days. One of the things that my kids loved the most when we were in Warsaw was the Manufaktura Cukierkow. Despite the language barrier, they were able to see how lollipops were made and create their own with the help of the super nice staff.
One thing to note is that, while you don’t always need reservations, it is recommended. And not all the staff understand English. I personally translated a message in Google Translate and emailed the company and that seemed to work. The thought of calling them and trying to navigate the Polish language over the phone gave me far too much anxiety.
I say this because I did, in fact, try to learn some of the Polish language before we left. My trusty Duolingo app and I logged some hours practicing basic phrases. However, I think it was easier trying to learn Mandarin Chinese than it was to learn Polish. Holy cow.
Skydiving Adventures In Poland
One of the things we did with the kids was visit Flyspot, an indoor skydiving attraction in Warsaw. While there are many places that offer this in the United States, the exchange rate in Poland makes the experience a little more worthwhile. Saving a few dollars is never a bad thing, in my humble opinion.
In another humble opinion, skydiving is so much harder than you would think. You see others do it and it looks like a leisurely freefall through the sky. But no, no it is not. At least, not when you are doing it indoors.
Our youngest went first and he totally rocked it. No issues whatsoever. I came up next, and I did the total opposite of rocking the adventure. At one point I rammed my head into the plexiglass wall. My shoulders and arms were so sore after all was said and done. I will forever say that I suffered a skydiving injury after my experience running into the wall, and nobody is ever allowed to correct me.
Copernicus Science Centre
My daughter really enjoys science, and always has a blast when we find museums with that focus. We went to a really neat one in Montreal, and wanted to be sure to hit up the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw. Named after the famous mathematician and astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus, this museum has some awesome exhibits with a futuristic focus.
We really liked the robot displays. There was a robot dog that moved around and explored its own room and also a robot Copernicus himself. There were concept cars to check out, new technology with prosthetic limbs, and so much more. You could easily spend all day here checking everything out.
The Bunny Cafe!
One of the things that we saw during our visit was just as much fun for me as it was our kids. After a few days in Warsaw we went south to Krakow to see what they had there. In Krakow they have a bunny cafe. When you are there you can sit with a bunch of different bunnies, feed them treats, and watch them play. You get something like 20 minutes of time to start, but you can go back and get another pass to go through again, and you can repeat that over and over.
Both kids and I did a session, and then my daughter and I went back for another. They are so cute and fluffy and we had so much fun. Such a simple concept, but it’s such a great time. The cafe also sells coffee and snacks, and with the exchange rate it feels like you are paying pennies to hang out and pet some adorable animals.
Your Adventures in Poland Don’t Have To End There
Not only can you take your kids along for the experience in Poland, but they can have a great time right alongside you. In addition to the activities above, I highly recommend the following for your little travelers:
Wieliczka Salt Mine – Located just a short distance from Krakow, this experience will take you the furthest underground that you’ve ever been. Make sure to pick up some of the lavendar soap made with the mine’s salt at the end!
Wawel Royal Castle – Learn about the Krakow castle’s dragon!
Museum of Illusions – This Krakow museum is super fun to explore and will have you flipping around before your eyes.
Ultimately, I Can’t Pick a Favorite
Our trip, and subsequent adventures in Poland, was a great time for all of us. The travel was long, being that we originated from Denver this time instead of Chicago or Detroit, and that took a toll. However, the many attractions were awesome. I will definitely go again when the kids are older so we can visit Auschwitz and some more of the historical landmarks. Have you been to Poland? What were your favorite places?
